Community service is defined as unpaid work for community betterment. Engaging in community service is a great way to explore much of what we learn in chapters six and seven.

Nursing homes for the elderly are becoming important components to communities especially to the developed countries. Good healthcare service packages mean that people live longer than before. People who are 65 years or older keep increasing in society. That makes nursing homes important components of the emerging paradigms of community service. Superficially, the nursing homes keep experiencing an escalating influx of elderly persons with little emphasis put on the personnel and the amenities that they need to live comfortably in those homes. My visit to one of the local nursing homes for the elderly was to determine if there are roles I could play to enhance the quality of lives of those senior citizens.
My three visits were characterized by different roles. The first day was important as it was the day that the home conducted a general cleaning for all the occupants. Clothing and beddings would be cleaned. The few available nurses would collaborate with a few volunteers to help clean the sleeping areas too. The second day was participation in physical activities. During physical exercises, those aging individuals need monitoring. Due to the scarcity of professionals, they are obliged to seek help from volunteers. Unknown to me, members of the community have been entering the home to help with monitoring the patients during physical exercises. The third visit was majorly for social interactions. This visit majorly involved light-note interactions and sharing.
There were a lot of things to learn from the three-day experience at the nursing home. Primarily, the society isolates aging individuals. Once they are put in nursing homes, society tends to forget about them. People do not understand that just like anybody else, the aging individuals need to be happy, they deserve to have a high-quality life, and they deserve love. I also learned that the community still lacks the resources to cater for its needy and vulnerable populations. I noted that there were few employees and nurses who were supposed to assist all the sickly senior citizens. Ultimately, I learned that nursing homes for the elderly have a lot of gaps that could be filled in terms of service by anybody who is willing.
