Religious pluralism is a common phenomenon. It is one of the core subjects of discussion. The pluralism debate in America is partly attributed to its most heterogeneous population due to widespread migration and racial or ethnic intermingling. From a sociological perspective, religion is considered as a social, societal construct. A case study entitled “A Hands-on Approach to Pluralism” provides an overview of how religious pluralism exists and operates.
The case study at Harvard involves a group composed of Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Pagan, and spiritual or not-religiously-identified, discussing various issues including American civil law, communal attitudes, and clash of religious freedoms. This group focuses on multiple cases, including the case of Park 51 (an Islamic center), the Reform Church of Palos Heights, IL. Arabs expressed interest in buying the Reformed Church of Palos Heights. This expression led to conflict. City’s typical Dutch ancestry residents, affiliated with the Reformed Church of America, Christian Reformed Church, and associated Catholic parish, were against Palos Heights' purchase due to its lack of diversity. This case study demonstrates a lack of tolerance for diversity and religious heterogeneity. People were worried about this purchase by Arabs who were believed to hold different cultural practices. It could be prejudice and the fear of the unknown that led to the Palos Heights conflict.
During this discussion, the group comprising different religious believers and non-affiliated members shared differing opinions on how they might have acted or responded in similar situations (Telushkin, 2016).
