Concert Review – Victor Provost Quartet
I watched the Caribbean jazz fusion concert introduced by Professor David Rothman by Victor Provost quartet of the Robert E. Parilla Performing Arts Center of Montgomery College. The concert started bland, with the four performers making an introduction with their instruments. However, throughout the concert, the band's dynamic gained momentum and evolved through the night. Harmony was provided the piano and a unique percussion melody instrument which I do not know the name. The percussion was provided with a modern drum set, while the bass was from a big Bass from the violin family. Overall, the concert was very enjoyable and smooth. The talents of the artists were highlighted by each other's skill and musical cooperation. The complexity of the songs performed complemented the simplicity of the stage. The performers presented their songs without any faults, at least from what I have witnessed and perceived.
Since the genre is Caribbean jazz, the performers started with a smooth melody that made me remember the beach. The diversity of the members was complementary to the unity of their music. The tunes and rhythm made me imagine that I was at a seafood restaurant in the Caribbean on a sunny afternoon. The music provided the vibe of freshness and rest as the musicians flowed and made their expressions more intense with every minute. Each person could blend their musical instrument to a theme that brings the audience to the artists' flow. One by one, each instrument was highlighted as other artists gave way and played a little more silently to emphasize the sound of a single instrument.
