Music vs. Sound
Music constitutes more than a collection of sounds. Arguably, sound only provides a vehicle through which music is produced and conveyed. It is also worth noting that not all sounds produced when music is playing are relevant to the piece. Such sounds as inhaling sounds produced as the singer breathes or the string vibrates and other irregular sounds are usually devoid of musical score and hence, constitute noise. Conversely, musical sounds tend to be periodic, regular and guided by a specific tempo. In music, extraneous sounds are carefully filtered and the pitch, loudness and other critical elements of the musical sound diligently controlled to guarantee the production elicits a pleasing or soothing effect on the listener’s ears CITATION Mag09 \l 1033 (Magnuson).
As earlier observed, unlike other audible sounds, musical sounds are guided movements or period during which they are composed. Different movements have different effects on the form of the music. With regard to the 20th century music for instance, such movements as the expressionism, futurism, and minimalism had a significant impact on the form and organization of musical sounds. While expressionist music allowed for spontaneous eruptive expression of subjective feelings or emotions, minimalist music of the postmodern era permitted composers to strip down musical sounds to their most fundamental elements, producing simple and repetitive music with steady beats.
