The film, El Norte is set in Guatemala. It involves a brother and a sister, Enrique and Rosa respectively. Both the brother and the sister strive to get away from both ethnic and political oppression of the land. To actualize their wish, they try to escape to the North of Guatemala where they and believe they can enjoy the “American dream.” The contextual questions are, one, what is the scope of defining the American dream? Two, can an illegal immigrant achieve the “American dream” (Freires, et.al. 12).
The film setting highlights the economic exploitation among Hispanic persons. The Hispanic people exploit each other in a way that is hard to notice. Initially, both Rose Enrique are unable to notice that it is almost not possible to be unconstrained. This impossibility is exacerbated by the fact that they are not just immigrants but illegal immigrants. Apparently, Enrique and the sister may be safe living in America as compared to Guatemala (Drewelow, et.al. 5). On the other side, they cannot enjoy most of the benefits of living in America like the Americans.
