Restorative justice is a response to crime that involves the offenders taking responsibility for their actions, understanding the damages, and getting a chance to redeem themselves and avoid future misconduct. The system does not conceive justice as a punishment but rather as a repair to damage (Siegel et al., 393). Seven core values describe restorative justice. This paper discusses three principles: restoration of community, offenders having a personal responsibility to victims and the community for wrongdoings done, and wrongdoers developing an improved understanding and competency.
Making young offenders take personal responsibility to the victims and the community for their actions promotes accountability. In such cases, the offenders meet and talk with the victims to understand how the crime affected them (Siegel et al., 385). In addition, the delinquents must apologize and personally work to restore the harmony they disrupted.
