Chinese Embroidery
Chinese art has always been known all over the world for its unique design characterized by exquisite details and craftsmanship. Chinese pieces of art could be seen in almost any material such as wood, porcelain, stone, and even silk. What makes it even more distinctive is the theme that usually shows in these kinds of works such as nature, mythology (e.g., dragons), and history. Perhaps one of the materials mostly used even today in Chinese art is the silk as most men and women from all status in life have somehow learned to embroider as a part of their family tradition. In the succeeding sections of this paper, a more detailed discussion of the history and the ideas behind the world famous Chinese embroidery will be found.
While there are differing accounts about when and where Chinese embroidery initially started, artifacts of Chinese embroideries are found as early as the time of the Zhou Dynasty. However, this art would be widespread throughout the country by around 206 BC to 200 AD, or commonly known as the Han Dynasty (Fercility). It was also during this time when four dominant schools in the art have emerged, namely Shu, Su, Xiang, and Yue (Fercility). While these four schools differ in style, craft, and technique what makes them similar is their use of silk in their embroidering methods (Asia-Art.net).
Aside from the four renowned schools of the art, classifications of Chinese embroidery could also be categorized based on the centers of embroidery where they originated.
