Your essay will be based on one of the questions below. You are persuading your reader to agree with your findings. Each body paragraph should have at least two quotes with supporting evidence (parenthetical citation) to support your thesis statement. Your essay will answer one of the following prompts:
Empathy- According to Atticus, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view – until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (30). How is empathy toward others demonstrated or learned by characters such as Atticus, Scout, Jem, Dill, or Miss Maudie?
Courage-What does the novel have to say about “courage?” Who are three courageous characters in To Kill a Mockingbird, and how do they demonstrate their courage?
Coming of Age-With age and experience come knowledge, the realization of harsh realities, and finally wisdom and understanding. Trace either Jem OR Scout’s journey from innocence to understanding.
Racism- “I’m simply defending a Negro—his name’s Tom Robinson” (75). With these words Atticus informs Scout of his life-altering task of standing up to the prejudice and racism that pervades the sleepy southern town that was Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930’s. Discuss the effects of racism on Maycomb citizens such as Tom and Helen Robinson, Calpurnia, Scout, Jem, Dill, Mayella Ewell, or Dolphus Raymond.

The fight against racial discrimination requires courage and determination for an individual to succeed. Harper Lee's thriller novel to Kill a Mockingbird outlines the story of Tom, an African American who was falsely accused of rape due to his ethnic origin. Various characters show courage and strength in defending the rights of Tom. It is through the characters' stand on what is fair and just, that make them courageous. Therefore, courage is shown through the characters of Atticus, Boo Radley, and Miss Dubose in an attempt to show the other characters that they should not discriminate or judge other people.
Atticus shows courage by accepting to take the case of representing Tom Robinson. Tom is an African American man accused of having assaulted and raped an elderly woman. Therefore, the whites of Maycomb are determined to see Tom pay for his sins. "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view … until you climb into his skin and walk around in it" (Lee 30). Atticus believes that Tom is innocent and is willing to withstand the people's anger to ensure that Tom gets a fair trial.
