Laura Anderson begins her book, Chains with a catching statement, "ghosts hear us well before the sun rises, and that’s the best time to talk to them". This book is about Isabel, a thirteen year old in the period of American Revolution. The book is about an enslaved thirteen year old slave, Isabel and her sister Ruth, during the American Revolution. The two had been sold by their nephew to two masters who had lost their mistress. The major characters in Laura Anderson’s Chains include Isabel and her sister Ruth; servant Becky; a young male slave, Curzon; Bellingham and Madam; and Isabel’s masters Mr. and Mrs. Lockton. Anderson characterizes Isabel with courage, power, and intelligence. She is portrayed as an admirable character in the novel. Isabel is very optimistic. When fights break out between the Loyalists and the Patriots, Isabel sees a solution in it. However, she learns quickly that the fight was just beginning (Caldwel 23). The life of Isabel is full of several attempts to fight ad risk her life for freedom. She uses her intelligence and courage to attempt escape.
Isabel is a freedom fighter. In her attempts to fight for freedom and escape slavery, Isabel says that "I was chained between two nations." (Anderson 182). She wanted to escape from her masters, Lockton by joining the British. The Locktons were harsh British Loyalists, and she would practically do anything to flee. In her fight for freedom, Isabel protects her sister Ruth from abuse. She says "better me than Ruth, better me than Ruth" (Anderson 33), in order that her sister may not be abused for making a ruckus. Isabel only cares about her sister’s protection.
