First, the country had the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans. Then came the Whigs and Democrats and finally, the Democrats and Republicans. In the history of the US, “no third-party candidate has ever been elected to the White House” (Murse, np). A number have won seats in the US Senate and the House of Representatives, but that is as far as they have come. A good example of the few is Sen. Bernie Sanders. However, why do third parties fare badly in American politics? Well, there are several reasons for this, and one of them is that the American political system embraces the winner-take-all philosophy. This means that as a candidate, one needs to “get a plurality of the vote to be elected” (Blake, np). Additionally, “in 48 of 50 states, presidential candidates get all of a state’s electoral votes.” In a system where the popular vote holds that much power, it makes little sense to form a third party. Explaining why America embraces a two-party system is a wide topic, but this paper’s focus is on the Republican Party or GOP and below is a description of the party, its philosophy, and an elucidation of the party’s stance on several current issues. The Republican party is one of the major political parties in the US. It was formed in 1854 to bring in fresh ideas that would rival the Whig’s and Democratic party’s ideologies at the time. The Republican Party is the only third-party in America to ever succeed in warming the hearts of Americans. However, it should be noted that at the time, it was easier to start a party. The country’s first Republican president was Abraham Lincoln who is also considered as the greatest American president. Lincoln not only showed great leadership, but was also eloquent in his speeches a good example being the Gettysburg address.
