The idea of removing racial inequality issues and discrimination has been one of the main goals of education for a long time. For the State, educational institutions, and private individuals, education is one of the cornerstones that could help reduce racial bias, inequality, and discrimination at the very core. However, despite all these efforts, studies have shown that the current educational system has many ways to go to improve its capacity to improve on this aspect, such as the earlier and more intensive inculcation of racial equality towards a child. Accordingly, this article would focus on these points of improvement. All in all, the author believes that while education is still the most important means to address these issues of racial inequality, such efforts could be improved through the integration and collective efforts of every stakeholder.
Reducing Racial Inequality
One of the main improvements that could be implemented in education that would reduce racial inequality is a radical shift in its curriculum. In the article written by Barrett (2017), he noted how education has failed to make the idea of racial inequality more intensive for every student. For example, he noted how subjects in the natural sciences have become too “passive” and “neutral” with regards to the idea of racial equality. Accordingly, those subjects that are supposed to teach these concepts (e.g., Social sciences and the Humanities) emphasize the White Males and less towards Black authors and artists. In the author’s experience, for example, he noted how the Humanities and the Social Sciences have focused on the works of Shakespeare, Hobbes, and J.S. Mill, among others that are mostly whites.
