There are a number of reports that claim smoking is the number one cause of death. Despite the constant warnings and campaigns that are directed toward encouraging people to stop smoking, the practice continues to be an issue in most nations. With the introduction of e-cigarettes, the issue of smoking has become common among children and young adults as well. The worst part is that these children do not have an idea of how dangerous the e-cigarettes are and neither does the government or even the e-cigarettes companies know what health risks might result from smoking these electronic cigarettes. What is clear is that e-cigarettes contain nicotine, a substance that is also found in tobacco cigarettes, which affects the brain’s ability to develop. Dwyer, McQuown, and Leslie (2009) state that exposure to nicotine at an early age can distort brain development and lead to addiction. Even though e-cigarettes are helpful to individuals, it can also be harmful, especially for children. The best solution would be to restrict its use among the youth and children. Therefore, the government should definitely regulate e-cigarettes but not ban it completely.
Considerably, e-cigarettes have benefits which are specific to tobacco smokers. The e-cigarettes help to relieve smoking cessations, meaning that a tobacco smoker can use the cigarettes as a means of restraining from using tobacco cigarettes. This proves that e-cigarettes are important in the fight against tobacco use. Banning the use of e-cigarettes would not be a solution; instead, it can worsen the situation, especially for individuals who are already addicted to tobacco. Moreover, it would be irrelevant to ban a product like e-cigarettes that has fewer health effects and fail to ban tobacco cigarettes, which has already proven to be more harmful by the number of yearly deaths. A better solution would be to develop a regulatory framework that ensures that the product is less consumed by the youth and children, but is readily available for use by adults. Such a framework would be helpful in fighting the war against tobacco use, while at the same time ensuring that children and young adults do not get addicted to smoking.
