Every citizen in the province of Alberta is required to possess some government documents such as a driving license to identify himself or herself to the traffic officers, for example. However, to acquire such important documents, one has to identify his or her gender as male or female. But it is true that there are transgender people in this province who also should enjoy the rights and privileges including accessing government documents like any other. This has elicited a hot debate on whether gender should be removed as a requirement in filling driving licenses in the province of Alberta. Those opposing removal of gender identifier argues that gender identification is good for security matters. However, gender identifier should be removed in the driving license because it is distressing to the transgender people, denies transgender access to these documents, it is not a requirement in other democratic nations and also contributes to harassment and discrimination of transgender.
Asking the transgender individual to state their sex in either male or female slot while filling a driving license form is very distressing. Transgender people identify themselves as bi-sexual simply because they do not feel like they should be identified on either gender because of their bi nature (Mršević 2016). Demanding them to fill either male or female, therefore, makes them feel discriminated and forced to adopt a sex identity that they do not belong to. This is not a good scenario considering that America at large has made great progress in fighting for rights for all people including lesbians and gays (Mršević 2016). It infers that the transgender should not be left out and discriminated while they are equal citizens of the nation and ought to enjoy the rights and liberty despite their sexual identity as binary (Mršević 2016). Therefore, the province of Alberta should remove the sex identity in the driving license so as to accommodate binary sex individuals without making them feel discriminated.
In addition, making it a requirement to reflect individual sex identity in the driving license has blocked transgender people from accessing services. According to McGill & Kirkup (2013), transgender people who try to apply for a driving license and fail to indicate their sex have been unable to acquire a driving license as their applications are turned down. Again this is discriminative because these people are denied such an important document on the basis of not being female or male (McGill 2013). Being transgender does not mean that an individual should not access services as any other citizen. Thus, gender identity should be removed so that bisexual individuals are not locked from accessing driving license which is an important requirement for one driver in a car.
