Whenever isolated societies come into contact with the rest of the world, there is always a lot of friction, anxiety and even tension. This is often due to uncertainty over the intents of these new groups of people and even what they carry along. There will always be severe impacts whenever the two meet, with some even having permanent consequences on either of the societies. This was brought into quite vivid focus by Elizabeth Fenn's article Biological warfare in eighteenth-century North America: beyond Jeffery Amherst. In the article, the focus revolves around the culpability of the colonists concerning their genocidal impact on the local population.
This reading has impacted my understanding of contemporary issues, especially realizing that not all new encounters are good.
