Early childhood development is an important factor in the life of any child, and a responsibility that requires a lot of wisdom and consideration from the guardians. Even though research has shown that there is no huge role played by the parent in most of the classroom or school programs, findings reveal that there is absolutely every reason for parental engagement in childhood development. The Reggio Emilia philosophy is a child-centered head start approach that basically looks at how the child perceives things in order to learn. It involves the observation of what a child knows, what he wants to know, and what challenges are experienced in the process.
In institutions that employ this approach to teaching, there is a focus on the use of graphics and images as the main language to be used by the kids in the interpretation of their perceptions. It regards the surrounding environment as the third teacher. The mainstay of this approach is the creation or existence of spaces that are abundant with the prerequisites for adequate child learning. These can include the materials, tools, or the necessary qualified personnel. The teachers’ or educators’ pedagogy of the approach is an important element that factors in its implementation (Smith, 2014).
Design and Creation of a Reggio Emilia-Inspired Activity
Just like any other learning process, this approach is based on feedback mechanism. Asking of questions and awaiting responses upon which some simple theories are built, is key. This can be done, not necessarily through asking them straight, but by getting a clue about what the kids have been wondering about. This can be done through observation of their actions; there are those activities or objects that the child might be showing particular interest in. Alternatively, they might say some statements, or ask a direct question about the topic of interest. This provides the clue on what to design (G.R.C.D.C., 2015).
Once the clue has been found, it is important to go ahead and do a background check on what the child already knows about the topic. This is particularly interesting since it depends with age. For the older children, some small discussion can do, while for much younger kids, paying close attention to their activities is key. The building of this relationship between the child and the teacher is essential since the child takes the teacher as the mentor. All these information should be noted down since it is going to help in the design process (An Everyday Story, 2015).
Deciding the type of activity is now the start of incorporating the principles of the Regio Emilia approach. It must involve the activities that the children enjoy. Now, there are so many activities th...
