Violence in Schools
For this assignment, I plan to research the topic of school violence. The central question I hope to answer is “What should contemporary society be doing to alleviate school violence?” What I know about school violence is that it creates a disturbance within an educational system. School violence is not solely associated with school shootings; it includes physical and verbal altercations. School violence also encompasses bullying through weapon use, electronic means such as social media, threats, and gang activity. Through this paper, I will answer three questions: What is school violence? What are its causes? Moreover, what is the solution?
School violence encompasses psychological violence, including verbal abuse; physical violence, including corporal punishment and student-on-student violence; sexual violence, including sexual harassment and rape; carrying weapons to school; and various forms of bullying, including cyberbullying (UNESCO, 2017, pg 9). Such behavior can also result in gang fights and bullying.
Further, school violence can occur because of psychological deficiencies observed in dysfunctional homes. Anger, worry, inferiority complex, hate, and other negative emotions which facilitate violent behavior can develop in individuals when they witness disaccord in the family unit or are exposed to poor parenting. Also, in homes where parents convey violent behavior, the children tend to embrace violence as a method of asserting authority (Enyinnaya, 2015). Exposure to violence th...
