The Jumping Frog Of Calaveras County Research Paper

Research Paper Instructions:

Choose one author of literature that we have read this semester or choose another published literary writer. All authors are subject to my approval. (The best strategy is to choose one work written by your author. A story, novel, poem or play is best and then limit you research to that one work.) Once I approve your author, begin your research using the FIT Library and its on-line sources that a librarian will show you during your library session in this classroom on Friday, March 3rd.
Each of you will meet with me during class time to discuss your approach to the research and once I have approved your plan, you proceed as follows:
1.    Start with biographical information on your author. Find at least one good biographical source and use this information for the first part of your paper.
2.    Choose one literary source, preferably a scholarly (peer reviewed) or critical article published in a university press journal. Use this source as the second part of your paper.
3.    Choose another source of the same quality as your first source and make this source the third part of your paper.
4.    Choose a third source of the same quality as your first two sources and make this source the fourth part of your paper.
5.    The fifth and last part of your paper is a conclusion in which you will comment on what you have learned about your author from your research.

Mark Twain
Mark Twain was born on November 30, 1835, in the Florida, Missouri. He was known as Samuel L. Clemens at the time of his birth. He later spent his childhood in Hannibal found on the banks of Mississippi River. Clemens was seven years old when his father who was a lawyer died. As a way of helping his family to earn more money, Clemens took up the responsibility of working as a store clerk and also a delivery boy. Mark also began working as an apprentice where he learned how to conduct trading activities. He also became a compositor where he worked with the various local printers and he would at that time contribute occasional pieces to the local newspapers. One of the common ones is called, ‘The Dandy Frightening the Squatter” that was published in the sportsmen magazine in Boston, Massachusetts. In the year 1853, Clemens began wandering as a journeyman printer to St. Louis, Missouri, Chicago, Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania, and Philadelphia and then he settled briefly with his brother Orion in Iowa. At twenty year old, he set out to make his fortune and became a steamboat river pilot until the outbreak of the civil war in 1861-1865. In the year 1865, Twain wrote a short story called, The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County which brought him national attention.
Most of his western writings were done hastily and carelessly; therefore, he did little to deserve it. Due to his skills in writing travel accounts, he became a travel correspondent for the Alta California where he would travel around the world and later write letters. He married Olivia Langdon in the year 1870, and they had three daughters. At that time his writings had expanded, and he was recognized as a writer. He later became a lecturer at England in the year 1872 and 1873. He also wrote Tom Sawyer which is a narrative of an innocent boyhood play that accidentally discovers evil when Tom and Huck witness a murder by Injun Joe in the graveyard at midnight CITATION Ala09 \l 1033 (Alan). Another finest creation by Twain is called, Huckleberry Finn. Huck lacks Tom's imagination yet he is a simple boy with little education. It is made up of a series of adventures that can be viewed as a story of the quest for freedom and an escape from what the society requires in exchange for success. After a series of unsuccessful business ventures in Europe, he returned to the United States in 1900, and most of his writings were bitter given the death of his wife in 1905. He later died on April 21, 1910.
The source chosen is the American Literary Scholarship by Alan Gribben. Gribben observes that the publications about Mark Twain have slowed temporarily due to a smaller number of scholars who are taking up Adventures Huckleberry Finn. He observes that the new classroom text of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer offers unique advantages that has made it more popular among the learners. One of them is that it is a contemplative biographical monograph that sifts and presents to the reader a legacy of vivid images about the adventure experiences of Twain. It can also be observed that most of the publications that are made by Twain, explore his own mental zigzags about the Civil War and the status of the civilians d...
