Research Paper Instructions:

TASK

You will research and craft a paper exploring the work of a major poet. You will utilize scholarly articles from databases and/or books and properly document the sources of the information. The paper should focus on analysis of the poet’s writing, which could include an exploration of their style or their participation in a literary movement. DETAILS The thesis of the paper should be along the lines of “The poet soandso is remembered/revered/applauded, etc. for their contributions to literature, especially with thethingthatpeopletalkabout.” You can replace the boldface text with specifics more tailored to your topic or reword it entirely if you wish, but that is what the paper should be about. The paper should begin with a generalized description of the poet and their work, as well as relevant historical context. Explain what is interesting, exciting, or engaging about the topic. It should then describe what makes the poet important as a poet. How did they contribute to the field of literature? Did they introduce a new style or innovate on an existing genre? Did they handle topics in a way that was especially noteworthy? The body of the paper should consist of examples of scholars analyzing the major features/contributions of the poet’s work along with your explanations of that analysis. Finally, the paper should conclude by uniting those explanations of analysis under a main point. This should also be what ends each support section and is the point of the conclusion. You should also document your research properly with notecards, outline, citations, and a works cited page. STYLE AND CONVENTIONS As far as style and conventions are concerned, this paper must be written using academic voice. That means that there should be no contractions. (No “don’t” or “it’s”) The author of the paper, the paper itself, and the reader of the paper should never be referenced. (No “I” “you” or “in this paragraph”) Numbers that use one or two words should be written out as words (“Fifty three” or “two thousand”) Meaningless or vague words and phrases should be avoided: be precise and specific. MLA conventions should also be followed. All researched information and ideas should be followed by parenthetical citations. These parenthetical citations should be connected to full bibliographic entries on the Works Cited page. Everything should be spelled correctly. Titles should be correctly formatted. Every sentence should be a full and grammatically correct sentence. As you draft and revise the paper, frequently consult this rubric. It outlines how the points in this project will be distributed. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR ANY POINTS: ● No wholesale or piecemeal copy-pasting from uncited sources ● The paper’s topic must be the writing, not merely a retelling of the subject’s life ● Analytics should not return a high probability that the paper was AI-generated
