Racism in the American Food System
According to a 2011 report by the Illinois Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights, though low access to food was predominantly in the suburbs, African American communities were the ones mostly affected by the situation. I think that the racism that is seen in the American food system is a vice that is deeply rooted in the country. Generally, Black cities and neighborhoods have less access to healthy foods and grocery stores compared to their White counterparts (Reese, p5). The racial discrimination in the USA food market, together with other inequalities that are done by Whites blacks, has turned the latter into rebels. The rebellion that Black Americans exhibit is in retaliation to the discrimination they face. In the subsequent paragraphs, we discuss how deeply rooted racism has affected the American food market.
Racism has affected the American food system in many ways and across many areas. In 2007, the last grocery chain was closed down in Detroit City, an area that covers more than 100 square miles. In Oakland's flatlands, for every 93,000 residents, there is only one grocery. Black communities in Chicago were the ones mostly affected by the situation. Even in the New York area with environments with unhealthy food were associated with higher populations of blacks (Reese, pp 6). According to (Reese pp 08), supermarkets and many retails, and grocery stores avoid some because such areas are considered to be populated by low-income people. And in most cases, the areas with a low-income populace are usually occupied by blacks. This is spatial discrimination where grocery and retail stores decline to serve certain environments or unfavorably treat them based on the racial inclination of the customer base.
