Do you agree with President Trump’s Position on Trade?
President Trump has been vocal about the U.S.’s approach to trade for a long time. Before he was president, his stance was clear that the U.S. was being ripped off and that a different approach to trade was imminent. After his ascension to power, Trump has made it clear his stance is to make America great again, and this to his administration means finding the introduction of tariffs and a trade war with China. Trump has made it clear that he is against free trade and that the U.S. has, over the years, been the foundation upon which other countries build their economies. His administration looks set to change this, and thus far, it has plunged the country deep into a trade war with China. This article seeks to discredit or disagree with Trump’s position on Trade by showcasing the benefits of free trade the U.S. has so far accrued.
One way that the U.S. has benefited from free trade is through income generation that has helped enhance the lives of many U.S. consumers. Lincicome (2019) notes that these benefits often go towards the poor and middle-income families. This means that poverty rates are being eradicated as more families are able to afford the necessities. Lincicome continues to say that “trade’s consumer surplus is a big reason that Americans today work far fewer hours to own far better essentials than at any prior time in U.S. history.” When low and middle-income households can comfortably afford the amenities of life, it is a show of growth and strength. Poverty reduction is always a win regardless of the means used to attain such a goal.
