Rationale:

MBA programs around the country are starting to require their students to become more effective writers. This is in response to industry’s urging for grad schools to improve the writing skills of graduate students. Writing at the MBA level should be informative, colorful, and nuanced, and the writing should include simple words vs. complicated (especially if used out of context). The first sentence in these assignments, and for any presentation in a business setting, should begin with; “the single most important issue here is…”

As you read the journal articles for this course, remember the context of the MBA degree. The MBA is a practitioner’s degree. The degree signifies that you can think, analyze, solve problems; and then communicate solutions to business executives effectively and efficiently. Your analysis of the discussion in the articles, their relationship to this course, and implications related to the each reading assignment will prepare you to communicate in this manner.

 

The Assignment:

In each assigned module/week, you will choose 1 journal article from those provided in the course and write a Journal Article Review of at least 1,000 words, not including the title page or reference page. For each Journal Article Review, you must discuss how the theoretical model or treatment described in the article compares to the information discussed in your textbook. No more than 20% of each Journal Article Review may be quotations. You must reference the original article and the course textbook.

Introduction
The single most important issue here is sustainability, which has become an area of huge concern as organizations attempt to develop an effective strategy of sustainable supply chain management (SSCM). In an article entitled "Food Waste Reduction as a Challenge in Supply Chains Management,” Ocicka and Raźniewska (2017) argue that innovative strategies are required to tackle the global challenges facing the management of food supply chains (SC). Therefore, sustainability can only be attained when organizations look for innovative solutions that would tackle the problem of food waste. This paper reviews an article that seeks to develop effective mechanisms that can be used to reduce food waste in supply chain management.
Purpose
The purpose of the authors is to analyze the challenges associated with food waste in a SC, and develop effective mechanisms that can be used by organizations to deal with the problems of reducing food waste from the perspective of SSCM. The authors analyze numerous initiatives that can be used to minimize food waste, and they also present how different groups are utilizing these solutions in SC.
Background
For there to be a balance between economic, social, and environmental effects of the current goals, it is essential to ensure that the short-term objectives are sustainable and that they do not compromise the needs of future generations. Ocicka and Raźniewska (2017) define food waste as any food that is thrown away yet it is fit for human consumption, even when the food is left to spoil after being kept beyond the expiry date. Evidence indicates that for numerous decades, food waste has been a major problem despite many people in developing countries dying for lack of food. The UN Sustainable Development Goals aims at reducing the per capita global food by 50% by 2030. The circular economy in the EU aims at minimizing food waste by 30% by 2025, and by 50% by 2030 (Ocicka & Raźniewsk, 2017). Over the years, scholars have discovered that there are three major factors that contribute to food waste in the supply chain, including megatrends, management factors, and natural constraints. Megatrends have been worsening with time, particularly with the development of consumerism where consumers and organizations purchase and sell products which they cannot effectively manage thus leading to food wastage.
Application of Supply chain management theory
According to Ocicka and Raźniewska (2017), there are two main factors that determine food waste, and they include factors that take place along the food supply food chain and factors that are within the surroundings of the food supply chain. The problem of food waste can be minimized when organizations develop effective strategies using the framework of SSCM. There are numerous theories and frameworks associated with supply chain management.
