The Honourable Ben Cardin
United States Senate
Washington, DC
Dear Senator Ben Cardin,
I am writing to share the concern and offer my support for your opposition against the repealing and replacement of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). I am a registered nurse and a constituent of Maryland, serving at one of the healthcare facilities in the emergency room. The current government’s proposal to repeal and replace the ACA compels me to support you in opposing the legislation as it will adversely affect the remarkable results witnessed across the state of Maryland. The enactment of the ACA accounts for an increment in the enrollment for medical or health care insurance for over 400,000 people in Maryland. Cases of insurance fraud have also dropped significantly due to the consumer protection provided through the ACA, whose implementation further led to the creation of more job opportunities in both the healthcare and insurance sectors. It is for the above reasons and the positive outcomes in Maryland’s health care system that I encourage you to remain steadfast in opposing the government’s effort of repealing and replacing the ACA.
As an emergency room nurse in Maryland, I can attest with confidence to the increased rate of the insured patients in the state. The state recorded a 3.6 % decrease in the rate of the uninsured from 2013 to 2015, which reflected in the 400,000 individuals who acquired health care insurance through the ACA expansion program CITATION Con17 \l 2057 (Congressional Delegation, 2017). Besides expanding the insurance coverage, the ACA enhanced patient protection against insurers’ malpractices while also demanding comprehensive care at minimal or low cost for a wide range of medical needs. Nowadays patients can afford the emergency room services through their insurance, which encourages and motivates the healthcare professionals in such departments as people from all walks of life can access quality care from any healthcare facility in Maryland.
It is important that I reiterate on the proposed amendments to the ACA by the government and the adverse repercussions that would face the people of Maryland if the repeal or complete replacement of the bill is succ...
