Research Proposal Instructions:

This assignment asks you to explore a matter of social injustice that you feel is created, or exacerbate, through the public’s engagement with digital media. The manifesto should be 3,000 words and draw on at least four course readings and four external academic sources to explain the importance of this injustice, its relationship with digital media, and how it might be alleviated through more critical engagements with media. More specifically, this is both a research paper as well as an argumentative essay, meaning you will be expected to not just explain what the subject of your media topic is about but, more importantly, discuss how its operation, construction, or engagement with audiences can be viewed through a specific analytical lens. As a recommendation, choose a topic that you are interested in or passionate about or invested in learning more about, as that will make the research process flow more easily as well as be conducive to helping form the advocacy portion of the paper. While you certainly can build on the topic you discussed in your third journal, remember that you do not have to be committed to what you chose to write about in there (although it could be a useful springboard for the paper if you do choose to use it).
Finally, a short proposal of what you intend for your manifesto to focus on will be due on Friday, March 27th. This proposal should be about a page in length (double spaced) and it should include the topic that you want to research and analyze, a clear thesis statement about the specific theoretical focus that you intend for your project to be centered around, and some of the preliminary avenues of research that you believe will be useful for you in undertaking this project (you can reference which course readings you intend to use for this requirement, if preferred). full page, no head notes, date, or names required.
