"Hello, thank you for the opportunity to speak to you. Over the years, there have been many topics revolving around Christianity. Even though there are many topics, one topic that has attracted attention is the discussion about Sunday schools. The main reason is that as some people support them, others highlight that they are not worth investing in. To successfully address this argument, it is critical to understand the history of the Sunday school movements to understand the impact that they have had on society to make an informed decision.
Even though most people think that the Sunday school movement was started a few years ago, this movement has a long history. This movement was started in 1780 by Thomas stock and Robert Raikes. The Sunday school intended to cater to Gloucester's poor and orphaned children. Even though some people highlight that there were some Sunday schools by this time, most people recognize Raikes and Stock as the originators. The main is they made this movement popular, which caused many children to join it. For instance, their efforts were so popular that they prompted the laypeople and the clergy to set up similar schools in most parts of England, thereby setting up the Sunday school movement motion. This movement had a huge impact since, by 1800, approximately 200,000 children had already enrolled in different English Sunday Schools (MC Gill University, 2005). Fifty years later, the number had already increased to two million.
The following Sunday, schools were set up the individuals who were highlighting that the children of the working-class children were supposed to form a certain discipline. These individuals set up Sunday schools to teach these children reading, writing, catechism, and arithmetic to the 'deserving poor.' In most instances, whether these children would be enrolled was decided after they visited with their children, after nominations were conducted from the subscribers, and after these children applied. These children should attend these schools for approximately four to five hours weekly. The tutors took these lessons seriously since they were the only schooling the working-class children received.
Even though this idea has been frequently hailed as one of the noble achievements, it has suffered from a series of struggles to survive. For example, this movement suffered from a series of ecclesiastical pressure where some people were highlighting that these schools should not teach writing on a Sunday (Young, 2009). Moreover, other people questioned whether teaching in the lower classes was a good idea. The main reason is these individuals were worried that the following education could cause the children to forget their station in life. Moreover, these schools suffered from a series of financial constraints. For example, there were instances where the Church of England struggled to support these schools or offer them enough space or funds. This instance interfered with the normal running of the following schools.
