The Impact of the Internet on Education The internet has played an important role in opening up the world through access to information and communication. As a result, the world is now a global village with technological devices such as mobile phones and computers enabling instant messaging. However, the downside to this freedom is the resultant effect that social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter have on the young (Feng et al., 2019). Consequently, the internet has been seen to negatively impact academic performance of students, based on the amount of time spent on social media.
Students active on social media mainly seek engagements with their peers and other individuals online, with little regard for the impact it has on their GPA. According to Valkenburg and Peter (2011), low GPA results are exceedingly correlated with higher Facebook engagements when compared to students with higher GPA.
