How COVID-19 Has Impacted My Pathway to Nursing School

Admission Essay Instructions:

Please describe how COVID-19 has impacted your pathway to nursing school.
Prompts that may help you get started but shouldn't limit your responses are below:
Academic: Were you able to interact with your professors? Did you have to leave an academic program stateside or abroad? Did your school require you to move to Pass/Fail systems? Did your standardized tests or entrance exam get cancelled, delayed? Other academic barriers?
IMPLEMENT ANSWER: Covid 19 started when I was in school (Indiana State university) for my bachelor’s in nursing (did bridge Licensed Practical nurse to bachelor’s in nursing) through online from Jan 2020 to July 2021. I had challenges with clinical sites since I had to find my own clinical areas as recommended by the online school. I ended up doing clinicals in nursing home and military hospital that was very far from home. I boarded an airplane to the military hospital which meant I had to incur a lot of expenses like transportation, housing and food. It was very expensive to maintain since I requested my workplace to let me have a vacation which I used as my clinicals.
Professional: Did you hold a job? Did have to go out and seek new job opportunities? Did you lose a job? Other financial or professional barriers that you faced?
IMPLEMENT ANSWER: Yes, I was working as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the hospital. I did not have to go out of a job but was put on low census at some point when covid19 started. The challenges I had financially was paying for my tuition, rent etc
Personal: Did you have to move out of a house or dorm? Did you have to cancel travel plans? Did you modify your planned experiences related to healthcare or volunteer opportunities? Did you seek out volunteer opportunities that arose from the crisis? Did help family members that were affected?
IMPLEMENT ANSWER: I did not have to move out of a home. Family member got covid19 but were not so much affected. I did not get covid19 until I worked as a registered nurse in the medical surgical unit (covid19 unit), and I was pregnant. The plans I cancelled or changed was to transfer from a covid19 unit med surg to pediatric unit since I was pregnant. I stayed on the pediatric unit which is very rewarding.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has had a profound impact on the world, upending our lives in ways that will continue to be felt for years to come. The virus has disrupted many aspects of our lives, including education and healthcare. As a member of the healthcare fraternity, I have seen first-hand the many ways in which COVID-19 has altered my plans for the future. When the pandemic kicked off, I was online in school (Indiana State University) for my bachelor's in nursing (did bridge Licensed Practical nurse to bachelor's in nursing) from Jan 2020 to July 2021.
Because of the stringent measures and restrictions that came with the pandemic, I was concerned that I would not be able to interact with my professors as much as I desired. However, the online format allowed me to interact with my professors differently. I could email them with questions, and they were more than willing to respond. I could also attend virtual office hours, which allowed me to ask questions and get additional help. I could also join virtual study groups, which allowed me to connect with other nursing students and discuss course material. Fortunately, I stayed in my academic program. Unfortunately, the pandemic led to the cancellation of many exams.
My school required us to switch to a Pass/Fail system in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was necessary to ensure that no student would be disadvantaged in any way due to the pandemic. It allowed us to continue our coursework without any additional stress or concern. The switch to a Pass/Fail system has impacted my pathway to nursing school. I was already balancing work and school, but the pandemic made this even more difficult. The switch to a Pass/Fail system allowed me to focus on the knowledge and skills I needed to be successful in the profession. I could stay in my academic program.
Because of the pandemic, clinical sites were not available. With the pandemic causing a strain on healthcare systems, many clinical sites were closed down or had limited availability. This made it difficult to find a place to do my clinical rotations, and I could only find a f...
