Preferences for photographic art among hospitalized patients with cancer
Nature is one of the many alternatives and complementary therapies used within the wider health care system and are known for its potential benefits. Nature therapies increase patient levels of satisfaction and also influence the patients' health outcome which is beneficial for the patient with the extended stay. Many hospitals are using alternative and complementary therapies among patient with cancer, providing meditation rooms, healing garden and thoughtfully selected artwork like photography. Photography is one of the many art therapies that are yet to be investigated to know it's beneficial to the patient with an extended stay.
The article by Hanson et al (2013). Preferences for photographic art among hospitalized patients with cancer reviews how photography can be of benefit for hospitalized patients. The article focuses on hospitalized patients with extended stay and patient quality of life, reviewing the importance of the environment during the healing process (Hanson et al., 2013). The environment has an impact on patient physical, mental health and determines his recovery. Factors like natural light, outdoor views, and adequate ventilation, majorly contribute to patient health outcomes. The environment is one factor emphasized by Florence Nightingale, who believed that environment and outdoor views were the best strategies to improve patient levels of satisfaction and human comfort (Hanson et al., 2013).
This research study is important because it will help nurse manage the patient environment and help them during the recovery process. The results of the study will enable nurses to establish an appropriate environment to help in the restoration of patient health by coordinating external factors that might affect the patient's life. Viewing photographs containing nature or viewing nature are some of the activities associated with positive health outcomes among hospitalized patients (Hanson et al., 2013). Several studies have documented the significant role of nature in enhancing patients' healing process. These findings have indicated improvement related to decreasing pain during the healing process and also reducing the need to use seduction, all these changes in patient outcomes are attributed to distraction caused by nature and photography (Hanson et al., 2013).
In this study, the author hypothesized that the patient's preference for photographic art will affect the psychophysical and psychological aspects of patients. Therefore the research questions asked for the research study, especially
1. What category of photographs and which specific photographs do patients prefer? (Hanson et al., 2013).
2. What are patients' general predispositions toward viewing photographic artwork? (Hanson et al., 2013).
These two questions are...
