Mrs. Jefferson responds by saying she likes to smoke. “Why should I quit? If smoking is so bad, why do I smell cigarette smoke on the clothing of the healthcare providers working in the office?” As the RN who works in this setting, develop your plan of action for Mrs. Jefferson. The First step I would do in my antismoking plan against Mrs. Jefferson, who is an addict, is to make her accept her condition of addiction. This is because, having her admit her status of helplessness will be a motivation for her to go on the next steps. Mrs. Jefferson should be encouraged to focus on controlling her habit and the possible withdrawal. Moreover, this admission of being addicted and need of assistance will assist her to stay smoke free afterwards. When one quits such an addiction, there is always a temptation to go back to the habit. An admission of powerlessness will make her remember this each time she is tempted to do it (Reynolds, 2010).
