A state refers to a community of human beings who enjoy the monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force in a defined territory (Slide 2). It means that a state should have a well-outlined territory and a legal monopoly to use physical force. The power to tax constituents determines a state territory, which is also its geographic coverage. Charles Tilly claims that a state is a centralized and differentiated organization with control over the means of violence among the people living in the region (Slide 6). These organizations use threats to organize life within its territories hence a state. A state that can successfully coerce its population and manage life within its territory is successful.
