The health care system remains one of the most fundamental sectors in any society. Delivery of expected services to the people determines its effectiveness. Health services are highly dynamic. As a result, they keep changing with time, some getting better and some deteriorating. The American health care system is one of the most elaborate worldwide. This is not to imply that it has fully been free of controversy and challenges. In this discussion, a comparison will be done in regard to the health care system of America and that of India. The aim is to point out the distinct differences between the two and possible lessons that can be drawn from each.
The first difference between the two health care systems is in terms of spending. America is ranked as one of the biggest spenders in the health care system. A considerable percentage of revenue generated goes into the health care system. This is the exact opposite of India where not much in terms of investment is injected into the sector. Another fundamental difference between the two sectors is that there is a mixed involvement of both the private and the government sector as far as service delivery in India is concerned. The percentage of involvement of both private and government sectors can be rated as 50:50. Johnson (2010) notes that while the government of India remains committed to deliver health care services to the people, the private sector has also come in to bridge the gaps left by a constantly struggling public health care sector.
