The debate about whether public school students should wear uniforms or not has been on the mainstream media for years now. While others find the notion of students wearing uniforms plausible, others believe it is a bizarresuggestion and one that is worth discarding. This debate seems endless regardless of the fact that many schools have now implemented the idea. On one hand, students feel that their right to express themselves isbeing stripped away while parents and teachers believe that wearing uniforms is a way of encouraging equality within the school. Additionally,attention often seems to switch from education to fashion whenever students are allowed to don their home clothes. Therefore, it is indeed accurate to state that students in public schools should indeed be required to wear uniforms. Some of the common reasons for this include it encourages equality and also helps to reduce bullying, ensures security for students is guaranteed, saves parents money, and finally, helps to maintain and remind students of their purpose in school.
First of all, wearing uniforms is an easy way of encouraging equality within the school (The Washington Post). When students wear uniforms, they all look the same which means it would be difficult to distinguish the rich from the poor. With everyone wearing the same uniform, it will indeed be difficult to hear cases where students are making fun of what a fellow student is wearing. Bullying is indeedtraumatizing and its effects range from physical to psychological. Some students have been victims of bullying or have been targeted specifically because they are wearing a certain outfit. However, with schools taking the notion of school uniforms, these cases will automatically end.
