While climate change is a worldwide challenge resulting from contribution by done by every person and thus demanding action for everyone, it is unfortunate that people have so many reasons justifying their failure to do anything. For instance, when a person thinks of walking to work to save on pollution from gasoline emission, he would think of his evil twin brother who has just bought his first car and thus would use it to go everywhere including the shortest distances he could cover by feet. Similarly, when considering safely processed foods in other countries such as New Zealand, one would also think of the ways used to transport them to reach him. As a result, he would eventually feel that what he does to reduce carbon emission amounts to nothing. However, when people are encouraged to do nothing, they will be pushed to act when it is too late. This is the time when poverty and hunger would have engraved the entire world to the extent of people dying each day for lack of food. It is therefore notable that by failing to bother, the climate crisis evidenced at the end of people’s actions would be so great and severe that everyone would be regretting.
According to Pollan, many people are discouraged from acting to prevent further global warming and climate change by the actions of their friends. He argues, “There are so many stories we can tell ourselves to justify doing nothing”. This means that even when it is clear that everyone should act, there would be factors delaying one’s positive response. However, this comes at a time when projections by scientists are lesser than the intensity and severity experienced of melting and warming currently. This is an indication that every delayed action by people is getting too late and might come a time when any action taken by people would reverse nothing.
The bother people should take now should be based on the fact that any virtuous acts by individuals are not enough. According to Pollan, “Personal choices, no matter how virtuous, cannot do enough. It will also take laws and money”. This does not mean that the required change would be enough only through money and law. However, for the change to be significant, people need to make profound changes in their lifestyles. This is because as it is, the crisis of climate change is now a crisis of character and lifestyle. There is need of changing people choices because climate change mostly results from the countless insignificant daily choices as well as people’s needs, preferences, and desires.
