Differences between The Prince of Egypt Movie and the Biblical story of Moses
The story of Moses is one of the outstanding narrations in the Old Testament of the bible. The biblical context is found in the book of exodus whereby the life of Moses, his mission to rescue the Hebrews from Egypt and his death are described. This story has been a narration of various Hollywood movies in history. One of the Hollywood narratives relating to the story of Moses is The Prince of Egypt. The film is a movie animation depiction of the actions and the incidences going on through the life of Moses. Although the movie is interesting and attractive for general viewing, it differs from the original biblical story on the history of Moses.
The first difference is identified in the way the baby Moses is placed in River Nile. According to the bible passage, Moses’ mother put him in an ark of bulrushes doubled with asphalt and pitches and then placed it at the river bank (Bradley). On the other hand, the Hollywood narrative gives an account of both the mother and the siblings of Moses at the river bank while the child is left. However, the bible passage shows that his sister came later to keep an eye and see what will become of the child. The bible story doesn’t give an account of Moses’ brother appearing at the scene. Also, the video reveals terrifying moments while the baby was in the river that is not mentioned in the bible story (Mirren). The video movie shows that the baby was placed far from the palace while the bible indicates that the child was near the palace because the rescuers found him as they come down out of the palace.
In the Hollywood narrative, Moses was seen and rescued by pharaohs wife while the bible passage gives an account of how Pharaoh's daughter spotted the basket while she was going to bath and she sent one of her maids to collect it. The lady opened the basket and then saw the baby crying and she had compassion on him (Mirren). The movie reveals the child playing and being happy at the time Pharaoh's wife opened the basket. Pharaohs' wife doesn't talk to Moses' sister in the film, but after the daughter had taken the baby, the sister made a request looking for a nurse among the Hebrew women and pharaoh’s daughter agrees to the deal. The chosen maiden happens to be Moses’ mother while the movie airs Moses growing with Ramsey as brothers. According to the bible, Ramsey is Moses’ uncle and they don’t interact when Moses was growing (Bradley). The storyline of how Moses was rescued differs from the people rescuing the baby and the people nurturing his growth.
A significant difference occurs in the killing of the Egyptian man humiliating a Hebrew by Moses. The film depicts that Moses killed the man open and some Egyptians went ahead to complain. Also, the narrative makes the incident look like an accident and doesn’t reveal the real character of Moses as a rescuer of the Hebrews from the captivity of the Egyptians (Mirren). The audience of the movie can’t tell the significance of Moses in the story from the incidence.
