The presentation by the guest speaker, Victor Quijada, was informative and thought-provoking. I found it interesting to follow his various accounts about his early interests and experiences that shaped his career as a choreographer. One aspect that drew my attention to his arguments and explanations is that his stories closely correlate with many occasions I have encountered in my endeavor as a prospective marketing professional. It emphasizes the art of being a people person and finding the appropriate strategies of interacting with others while advancing one’s ambitions. Quijada acknowledges that diverse industries, including music and dance, have various surprises that can either encourage or discourage people from pursuing their interests. As a result, while listening to Quijada provide a detailed account of his experience and knowledge in this sector, I reflected on diverse elements that I can borrow to transform myself in my career despite being unrelated to his.
From the first few minutes of the presentation, Quijada emphasizes the concept of identities in dance groups and institutions. This aspect emerges as a critical component influencing my past experiences in the marketing niche, similar to Quijada’s (2022) description of being affected by different exposures early in his life. He acknowledges that the diversity that he experienced while working with other trainers brought a new perspective to his life. For instance, he started to introspect about where he belonged in the different styles. According to Buckland (2007), dancing has predominantly remained a highly porous, diversified, and contrasting niche. The author indicates that the fluidity in some of the dancing categories, including classical ballet witnessed in the contemporary, reflects the merging of different techniques. As a result, I identified with this observation by Quijada because I have experienced comparable experiences encountering diversified marketing approaches in an ever-changing customer-preference landscape. It was challenging to conceptualize the application of techniques that sharply contrast my previous exposure, making me feel a gap in my capabilities as a prospective marketer. This aspect led to Quijada’s discussion about dealing with people from diversified backgrounds.
It was interesting how Quijada describes choreographing with people from diverse backgrounds as intriguing and challenging.
