Union Organizations: Air Line Pilots Association International (ALPA)

Research Paper Instructions:

Overview
Once you complete Lesson 4, you’ll have learned about labor unions and the challenges they face going into the twenty-first century. You’ll write a research paper discussing how the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA) earned its success as a union organization. Using what you’ve learned, you’ll need to explain what this association has done to organize successfully. Include details about the challenges it currently faces and how they relate to the challenges of labor unions in the United States generally. Based on what you learned, you’ll also need to recommend strategies to help this organization improve.
Instructions
Prepare a research paper on the success and challenges of the ALPA. Include supporting research.
In detail, describe at least four ways ALPA has been successful in organizing and at least four challenges it has faced.
Discuss how these challenges relate to the challenges of labor unions in the United States.
Recommend at least four strategies to help ALPA improve.
Your project must be written in APA format and submitted as a Word document (.docx or .doc file format). You must include at least four valid references. Write a research paper of at least 1,000 words discussing the success, challenges, and recommended strategies of the ALPA.
Summary
The ALPA was founded in 1931 and represents more than 63,000 pilots from 35 US and Canadian airlines. This makes it the largest pilot union in the world. ALPA’s mission statement touts its commitment to collective bargaining and to representing all pilots in commercial aviation, and it has been deemed successful at doing so.
As you learned in Lesson 4, all labor unions face challenges as the world continues to change. This project requires you to use what you’ve learned about union organization to discuss what the ALPA has done to organize successfully. You’ll also discuss the challenges it currently faces and how they relate to the challenges of labor unions in the United States.
Goal
In approximately 1,000 words or more, use labor relations concepts to explain how the ALPA has benefited pilots and the airlines they work for, including challenges they currently face and strategies to improve.

The workers' conditions in the workplace have brought attention over the years. Do all staffs within the organization have privileges despite working hard? Does the paid amount correspond with the work they do in the institution? Different workers have established labor unions to address those questions, which help negotiate with employers. The labor unions have uniqueness depending on the industries where the workers fall, just like how democracy operates.
The Airline Pilot Association (ALPA) is a good example of a labor union established to maintain pilots' welfare globally. The structure of this union has supported United States and Canadian airline pilots since 1931. Organizing the unrepresented pilots, resources organization, consolidating the represented pilots, merger, and the growth by mergers are some of the organizing successes the union has realized.
Success in Organizing
Pilots who were not represented by any independent union have benefited from the ALPA. This trade union has made significant efforts in bringing benefits to different pilot groups, dating back to the 80s. During this time, the commuter carrier served passengers in the suburban areas of the states. The main aim of these carriers was to occupy the gap left by the larger airlines, which did not have permission to access the small market area following the deregulation. The commuter carriers made employment opportunities for thousands of pilots who did not have representation under any trade union.
Consequently, these workers were working under poor conditions, which required representation. The ALPA stepped in and offered collective bargaining and representation to the commuter pilots. Just like in the modern days, the ALPA helped to address safety standards, low wages, and shortage of benefits which was rampant among the unrepresented pilots.
The method and resource organization is something that ALPA can be proud of as its success. After the U.S. airlines began deregulating, smaller carriers emerged in different states. That way, the ALPA realized the importance of organizing the pilots within a single entity to represent their rights effectively. The pilots involved agreed mutually, which led to the dissolution of the Union of Professional Airmen (UPA). Consequently, the UPA pilots shifted their membership to the ALPA. Altair, Pocono, and Aeromech are some airlines whose pilots joined the ALPA. Some years later, this airline union formed the organizing department, which was vital in the organization's leadership.
The union has also helped consolidate the pilots with the representatives within the independent unions. In the late 70s, there were different independent unions like the Southwest Flight Crew Association (SFCA), whose view was to represent the Pacific Southwest Airline (PSA) pilots, which operated at greater freedom than interstate traffic (Martinez, 2021). However, this union did not have adequate expertise, especially in conducting the accident investigation. Therefore, the SFCA reached out for resource help and expertise from the ALPA. The ALPA’s accident in...
