Girl-to-Girl Bullying
Social norms and processes play a vital role in girl-to-girl hostility. Due to social expectations and pressures, young women may adapt and change their character and personalities and develop negative behavior towards other girls. Both parties, the victim and the perpetrator suffer long-term effects of bullying. Further, the author suggests that this issue be given proper attention since the change will take time.
There has been an increasing number of bullying cases, happening particularly in school institutions. Throughout generations, girls have been bullied. Regardless of age, women may have chances of having dehumanizing experiences in their lives that would greatly affect their character development. If not given proper therapeutic remedies, damaged young girls become damaged adult women. In line with this, girls can also be a bully. However, their way of bullying is different from the usual bullying done by boys of their generation.
Bullying can surface in three forms: physical, verbal, or indirect through online which offers one the pleasure of attacking another person without actually being in the near distance with the victim and having the options to hide one’s identity. Instead of direct physical hitting or insults did verbally, this type of bullying aims to damage the social status and relationships with other individuals belonging to a certain group. Recent researches illustrate that there’s a significant difference among boys and girls in how they bully other people. O’Neil (2008) claims that boys tend to use direct physical means of bullying such as kicking and pushing or through the use of verbal insults showing their aggressiveness whereas girls usually bully through indirect means. The bullying among girls, or known as relational aggression, differs from the physical bullying shown by boys as girls would engage in devious acts of bullying which includes threats sent via instant messaging app or emails utilizing internet technology. Additionally, girls would also tend to utilize the use of social media, making savage, inappropriate comments done verbally towards other individuals, creating false gossips, or isolation of these individuals from their own groups (Goldstein & Tisak, 2003). Using force and assault is not typical of girls with their feminine attributes, thus they lean more towards the indirect means of bullying. Girls are often associated with emotions, and so, girl bullies would tend to attack the mental and emotional well-being of an individual, leaving her emotionally unstable.
So, why do girls resort to bullying? Reasons differ, but the list includes the need for control, attention, or an outlet for anger. The strength that they portray outside may be shadows of underlying insecurities, needs that weren’t met like enough attention and acceptance. The behavior could also be a result of violence experienced at home and would consider scenes of humiliation are normal.
