Research Proposal: Effects of Media on Political Climate of the Media Consumers
The media offers a platform where society can learn and obtain detailed information about various facets of life. One facet of the media is disseminating information entailing the political state of the nation. As such, the media has offered a platform where the political standing of society can be manipulated. However, there is no adequate information on how the media plays its role in manipulating the political standing of a nation. This is a gap that warrants detailed research and has caught my attention. The media effect on the political standing of a nation and the policies made by leaders is a common agenda. Sparks (2015) explores the various methods by which media can have an impact on society.
Some of the effects are micro and macro levels, while others are classified as either attitudinal, behavioral, or even cognitive impacts. This classification, however, does not dictate what kind of media content has a particular nature the impact on the consumers. Therefore, despite the general knowledge on the media and its political effect, there is a gap in how the effect is impacted.
How the various forms of media content impact the political realm of a nation is interesting to understand. Moreover, how the effect determines the political outlook of a nation is important to explore.
Literature Review
Taking Global Crises in the News Seriously
Global situations and crises have created a new focal point for media entities. The way global news is presented often evoke national and international reaction among many nations. As Cottle (2011) explains some political policies made regarding global news do not necessarily reflect the genuine approach to addressing the issue.
The political class often rise to the occasion and attempt to make political statements regarding the news. Unfortunately, in many cases, the political class ends up politicking the issue rather than addressing it. Therefore, it is not clear on the effectiveness of the reaction of nations and the political class over the global news. As such, as Cottle (2011) notes, global news often drives the international community on facets such as political policies meant to address the issue.
Role of Social Media in Political Mobilization:
Media has become an integral part of everyday life among many people. particularly, social media has become influential among many people, especially the youths. Mazzoleni and Schulz (1999) explain that the media has power over the political climate of a nation.
The relationship is paradoxical, in that the political climate of a nation is dictated by the media. Interestingly, the topics and issues addressed by the political class are those highlighted in media content.
The reversed relationship between the political class and the media makes it interesting to explore how the media influences the political class of a nation.
