Values Related to Health-Care Decisions
The end of life is difficult for an individual and their loved ones, as it signals the final hours, days, or even months of one’s life. During this period, several decisions are made or need to be made to ensure one receives the best care that supports and follows what one desires. Since it is one point in life that I may not have the strength or capability to determine what I want, having advanced directives guided by personal values can make the period comfortable.
One of the most important values is maintaining dignity. Nothing scares me more about dying than losing my dignity and independence and not having the capability to do anything about it. Being unable to decide, speak to the health care providers, and express my wishes and what I do not like would be stressful and draining. A living will would be prudent, ensuring I can enumerate the treatment I want, be aware of my medical condition even without expressing myself, and have privacy and a respectful atmosphere. As a result, I retain my dignity to the very end.
Preservation of life through pain management is another important health decision that I would want to respect and observe. According to research, pain and discomfort are often underrated and under-recognized when one is dying.
